Grain-Free Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp

Ingredients:

Strawberries
Rhubarb
Almonds
Butter
Sweetener
Cinnamon

Our last local organic food box had a ton of rhubarb. It's not a something we eat a lot of, so we decided it was time to make a crisp. It's fast and easy to make, not to mention delicious!

I'm not sure of measurements. I just filled a baking dish with fresh strawberries and rhubarb, which I had chopped up. Sprinkled a little cinnamon. Then added some raw almonds, a hunk of butter and I used Sucanat, though I am sure you could use any sweetener, cinnamon and ground it all together in my food processor. Then I spread the almond mixture on top of the fruit and baked at 350 until it looked done.

Yum!

What I Made This Week-July 8th

I managed to do a bit more sewing this week, though it was one of those weeks where I had to make major mistakes on everything I made, so I am becoming quite proficient at taking garments apart.

Despite the mistakes, I am quite happy with what I have produced:

This is a shirt my sister in law asked me to transform. This mistake, I need to add a few more rows of elastic thread.

I silk screened yellow butterflies all over this beautiful knit, with a delicate floral pattern

and made leggings. The mistake, I am used to knit stretching in every direction, so I cut without checking. The leggings only stretch length wise not width wise, which is the most important way to stretch. No idea what to do with these now. My heart aches over this one.

A custom matching dress. The mistake, I made this super wide and short on my first attempt. Even though I have made this style dress numerous times, I totally messed up. It was a tad annoying.

and these three shirts are the before the transformation shots. I finally remembered to take before pictures.

Three shirts transformed into this lovely floral dress. Mistake, same as the other dress. I made it too wide. Ugh!

Blue, White and Green Rosettes. No mistakes!

Red Rosettes. No mistakes:)

Hip stripy pants. No mistakes:)

Jas showing just how fun these pants are:)

The mistake, I sewed the second to last panel of the skirt on backwards, and went on to serge the seam. That was un-fun!

They all worked out in the end, except for the leggings, which I still need to figure out what to do with. If you have any ideas on what I should do with the leggings, please do share them. I would be so happy to find a way to salvage them.

I hope you all have a great weekend. We will be celebrating my granny's 70th birthday today:)

What I Made This Week

I have been sewing up a storm this week to build up my stock for the summer markets. At the last Moss St Market, Rob's sister brought a friend who almost cleared me out of children's clothing. I'm not complaining. I am so grateful that she loved so many of my items, but now I have my work cut out for me.

These have been in my mind (as are so many other ideas) for a while I just finally got around to making them.

This pattern I got from Lil Blue Boo

This is another great way to use up scraps

This is not complete

I am thinking of adding a silkscreen or flower...something

Jasper my helpful model

This dress is so beautiful and magical to me. I imagine laying in a field of wildflowers and day dreaming of unicorns and princes on white horses.

This dress is made from a bed skirt that Rob found when we were thrift shopping. Because of the elastic smocking this dress can fit from a size 5 to a 10. It's a long dress for a 5 year old and can become a tunic for an older girl.

I love this little tank dress. It's so pretty and colorful.

What little girl doesn't love ruffles and flowers and polka dots. As well as pink and purple:)

Red and White pants, just in time for Canada Day

A cute little country skirt made from the bed skirt as well as some fabric given to me by an interior designer. I can see this with a cute tank paired with little cowboy boots. So cute.

As always everything has been made from upcycled or recycled fabrics. It is so much fun, and is so exciting transforming each piece into something new, and realizing the bounty of materials we have available to us, that there is not always a need to buy new.

I am really hoping to do some garage saleing (does that look wrong to you. It looks wrong to me) this weekend and try to discover used items we can transform into something new for ourselves.

What are your plans?

Win Your Discount Wednesday at SVP-June 8th/11

I skipped Win Your Discount Wednesday last week because I got this CRAZY idea that I have enough fabric. I know. Crazy. When can anyone have enough fabric? So today I had to make up for missing out last week.
We have to walk through this to get to the thrift store. Yikes for my hay fever!!

Then the tunnel of pollen.

But it was worth it. Today I won 25% off!!

I liked this because it reminds me of the sheets we had in my childhood. Actually I'm pretty sure we had these exact sheets.

The pattern is of tiny little hearts. I thought I could fix this up for myself or it would make a cute... something:)

I love eyelet fabric. This can be a cute little dress or skirt

and purple. I love purple

and flowers

you can never have enough flowers.

This one is just cute and funny.

I love my Wednesday shopping trips. They are always so exciting!
